Waste-to-Hydrogen flagship project in Aragón, Spain
A major milestone in Europe’s green energy transition has been achieved with the announcement of a new waste-to-hydrogen facility in Aragón, Spain. The project is led by Raven SR and has been recognized by the Government of Aragón as a “Project and Investment of Regional Autonomous Interest.” The project will be located in Zaragoza, and will serve as the first European hub for converting organic waste into sustainable hydrogen via Raven’s unique non-combustion Steam/CO₂ Reforming technology. This method stands out as it uses one-third of the electricity needed by competitive processes and uses no fresh water.
Raven SR’s €50 million investment underscores the strategic importance of hydrogen as a clean energy source. The facility is expected to produce approximately 1.8 million kilograms of hydrogen annually, with operations beginning in 2026. The production process will yield around 75 kilograms of hydrogen per ton of organic waste processed, significantly contributing to both waste management and sustainable energy production in the region. The facility will operate 345 days a year, producing up to 6,500 kilograms of hydrogen per day.
The project not only reflects Aragón’s commitment to innovative energy solutions but also marks a critical step in optimizing hydrogen production technology in Europe. Raven SR aims to enhance the results from its Richmond, California plant with the Zaragoza project. Backed by €2.4 million from the European Commission through the Hy2Market project and an additional €1.4 million from the Spanish government’s PERTE H2 initiative, the Aragón facility is poised to become a cornerstone of Europe’s hydrogen economy, positioning the region as a leader in the sustainable energy transition.
Moreover, the project will predominantly rely on suppliers from Aragón, Spain, and broader Europe, further enhancing the local economic impact. By addressing the twin challenges of renewable energy production and waste management, this initiative sets a new standard for future projects and scaleups in the hydrogen sector and reinforces Aragón’s strategic role in the global push toward a greener future.
