Mobility use of hydrogen

Hydrogen offers an exciting opportunity to revolutionize mobility by providing a clean alternative to traditional fuels. Through the Hy2Market project, we are testing and deploying hydrogen mobility solutions across different European regions to promote sustainable transportation and pave the way for the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Key Objectives:

  • Advancing Hydrogen Vehicles: We are increasing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of hydrogen vehicles by testing them in real-world scenarios, aiming to bring these solutions closer to widespread adoption.
  • Supporting European Regions: The project is focused on helping regions implement and scale hydrogen mobility solutions, taking into account local needs and conditions.
  • Encouraging Business Investments: Hy2Market promotes collaboration between businesses and regions to accelerate investment in hydrogen-powered transport, driving economic growth and sustainable development.

What We Are Doing:

  • Real-Life Testing of Hydrogen Vehicles: Across various regions, including Portugal, Spain, Romania, and the Netherlands, we are running pilots to test hydrogen vehicles such as buses and trucks. These vehicles are being integrated into existing transport networks to demonstrate their effectiveness and sustainability.
    • In the Médio Tejo region of Portugal, a hydrogen-powered bus is being tested on a 200 km route, linking six major cities, and is coordinated by Médio Tejo21 and IrRADIARE.
    • In Aragon, Spain, a hydrogen bus will operate in the city of Huesca, connecting key locations such as technology parks and logistics centers.
    • In Asturias, Spain, ALSA, a public transport provider, is testing a hydrogen bus on several routes to assess its performance against traditional fuel-based buses.
    • In Constanta, Romania, a feasibility study led by IAC Special Projects and MedGreen is underway to design and test a hydrogen minibus, showcasing alternative powertrains like Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV).
  • Developing On-Demand Transport Solutions: In some regions, hydrogen vehicles are being integrated into “Mobility as a Service” platforms, which allow users to book transport on-demand. This system, being tested in the Médio Tejo region, is designed to make public transport more flexible, efficient, and sustainable.
  • Evaluating and Scaling: After testing these innovative mobility solutions, we will evaluate their potential to be replicated in other regions across Europe. This will include developing business and investment plans to ensure these technologies can be expanded and adopted widely.
